U.S. Defense Innovation Unit selects Maxar to produce robotic arms for on-orbit servicing

WASHINGTON — Maxar Applied sciences received a $9.3 million Protection Division contract to provide two in-space servicing robotic arms for the Protection Innovation Unit, the corporate introduced Dec. 20.

The $9.3 million contract is for Maxar to additional develop a robotic arm it designed for each industrial and authorities clients. The robotic arms for DIU are about 2 meters in size every and can be delivered inside three years. 

“A key characteristic of those arms is that they are going to be underactuated, which means they’ll have a single motor operating a tensioned cable system to transmit torque to any variety of joints, lowering system weight and value,” mentioned Maxar. 

The corporate has produced six robotic arms for NASA’s Mars rovers and landers, and is constructing one for NASA’s On-orbit Servicing, Meeting and Manufacturing 1 (OSAM-1) mission and a Lunar Underactuated Robotic Arm (LUNA), a prototype supposed to assist Artemis program operations on the Moon.

For the DIU challenge, Maxar is partnering with Altius Area Machines, an organization owned by Voyager Area. Altius will present a magnetic latching connector and a magnetically latching software changer.
